About our Honoree...
Joe Mentrek is a Partner with the Cleveland-based law firm of Calfee, Halter & Griswold, LLP. As a member of the firm’s estate and succession planning group, Joe works closely with his clients to develop and implement creative strategies and tax-sensitive solutions to achieve their wealth transfer and business transition goals. He specializes in coordinating the delivery of comprehensive interdisciplinary business and personal financial consulting services involving complex estate, retirement, investment, tax and business succession planning on behalf of individuals, closely-held business owners, corporate executives, and not-for-profit organizations.

Joe’s history truly embodies the multi-disciplinary values of the Estate Planning Council of Cleveland, as his recent affiliation with Calfee comes after nearly eighteen years of practice in public accounting. From September of 1997 until May of 2015, Joe served as vice-president and director of the Wealth Center at Meaden & Moore, Ltd., a Cleveland-based CPA and business consulting firm with fourteen offices spanning the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Prior to his time at Meaden & Moore, Joe practiced with the law firm now known as McCarthy, Lebit, Crystal & Liffman, and the international accounting and business advisory firm now known as EY. Joe earned both his JD and his BSBA from Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio.

Joe is an active and visible member of the Cleveland estate planning community, and he is a frequent speaker and author on topics concerning estate planning, estate, gift and income taxation, business succession planning, and personal financial planning. He is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, and was chairman of the CMBA Estate Planning Institute in 2011. Jos is a past president and trustee of the Estate Planning Council of Cleveland, where he remains an active supporter of its committees and initiatives. He has served on numerous planned giving advisory boards, and is currently active with the Cleveland Clinic Partners in Philanthropy, University Hospitals Diamond Advisory Group, and the Planned Giving Advisory Board of the American Red Cross (Cleveland).

Joe and his wife, Colette Gallagher, live in Rocky River and are the proud parents of two children, J. Michael and Maureen. Colette is a practicing attorney and a successful real estate professional. J. is a graduate of Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, and is employed as a consultant with Investor Group Services in Boston, Massachusetts. Maureen will be entering her senior year at Dartmouth College in the fall. Joe and his family enjoy Cleveland sports, travel, and the outdoors.

About the Distinuguished Estate Planner Award...
The Distinguished Estate Planner Award was created in 2001 with the purpose of honoring an individual for outstanding contributions within the multi-disciplinary field of estate planning. Recipients of the award may currently be engaged in practice or retired, but must have been involved in the field of estate planning for a minimum of 15 years and a member of the Estate Planning Council of Cleveland for at least 5 years at some point in his or her career. Recipients also reflect the goals for which the council

was organized: to provide a better understanding of estate planning and of the services that estate planners can render to the general public; to promote cooperation and to foster a better understanding of the proper relationship among estate planners of different professions; and to further the education of the members of the council and of the public in the field of estate planning.
